Here’s a straightforward timeline for hail damage repair using paintless dent repair (PDR), broken down by severity level, plus the external factors that can stretch the process out.

Before any repair begins, a PDR technician needs to inspect your vehicle and count the damage. This assessment typically happens the same day you bring the car in, or within a day or two if you’re scheduling after a major storm when shops are busy.
During the assessment, the technician works under specialized LED lighting to identify every dent on every panel. Hail dents are often hard to see in normal lighting, especially on light-colored vehicles. The tech counts dents per panel, measures their depth and diameter, and documents everything for the repair estimate.

Severe hail damage is unmistakable. Every panel on the vehicle is dented, including vertical surfaces like doors and fenders. Dents are large, deep, and densely packed. The paint may be cracked or chipped on some impacts. Some dents may be too deep or too sharp for PDR alone.
Repairing severe hail damage takes one to two weeks of shop time. The total dent count can exceed 500, and the technician is essentially performing a complete surface restoration of the entire vehicle.
When Parts Are Needed
