It Happens Every December

You come out of Lakeline Mall or The Domain with bags in both hands, and there it is. A fresh dent in your door panel. No note. No witness. Just a ding that wasn’t there when you parked.

December is our busiest month for door dings and parking lot damage. It’s not hard to figure out why. Every lot in Austin is packed, everyone’s in a rush, and shopping carts have a mind of their own. We get calls every year from customers who found damage at Round Rock Premium Outlets, Barton Creek Square, Cedar Park Town Center, and about a dozen H-E-B locations.

If this just happened to you, here’s what to do.

Step One: Document the Damage

Before you touch anything, pull out your phone and take photos. Lots of them.

Get close-ups of the dent itself, showing the depth and any paint damage. Take wider shots that show where the dent is on the car. And grab a few photos of the parking lot around you, especially if you’re near a cart return or a tight space that explains how it happened.

Your phone timestamps these automatically. That matters for insurance.

If there’s paint transfer from another vehicle’s door, photograph that too. It tells us (and your insurance company) what caused the impact.

Step Two: Figure Out If It’s Urgent

Most holiday parking lot damage is cosmetic. Door dings, cart impacts, that kind of thing. These are annoying but not emergencies. You can drive home and deal with it after the holidays.

But some situations need faster attention:

• The dent cracked the paint down to bare metal. Texas humidity and winter rain will start corrosion fast.
• The damage is along a body line or near a panel edge where it could worsen.
• A door won’t open or close properly.
• Paint is peeling or flaking around the impact.

If bare metal is exposed, at least cover it with painter’s tape or clear nail polish until you can get it repaired. That buys you time.

Step Three: Think About Insurance (Before You File)

Here’s where most people make a mistake during the holidays. They’re frustrated, so they call their insurance company immediately. That might not be the best move.

Check your deductible first. If you’re carrying a $500 or $1,000 deductible and the damage is a single door ding, paintless dent repair probably costs less than your deductible. In that case, paying out of pocket keeps your claims history clean and your premiums steady.

Claims processing slows down in late December. Adjusters are busy, offices run skeleton crews, and everyone’s trying to close out the year. If you do file, get your documentation in order first. Clear photos, exact parking location, time of discovery. The more detail you provide upfront, the faster things move.

If paint is damaged or metal is exposed, get it fixed sooner. Central Texas winter weather isn’t brutal, but moisture and temperature swings can turn a simple dent repair into a rust problem over a few weeks.

A few things that actually help:

Park at the end of the row. One fewer car that can swing a door into yours. Yes, you walk farther. Worth it.

Avoid cart return areas. The three spots closest to the cart corral are the highest-risk spots in any lot.

Go early or late. The worst parking lot congestion at Austin shopping centers happens between 11am and 3pm on weekends. Shopping at 9am on a Tuesday is a different experience.

Use door edge guards. They won’t stop everything, but they absorb minor impacts. Cheap insurance.
